SCAA Attends Retirement Ceremony Held for Dave Westerholm

Yesterday was the Official Retirement Ceremony for Dave Westerholm, NOAA’s Office of Response & Restoration Director.  Members of SCAA; Executive Director Justin Russell, John Allen, and Brian House (MER) attended and presented Dave with a gift from SCAA. His long presence and participation with the SCAA membership was recognized. SCAA representatives wished him well.

Dave has led OR&R in its response to both immediate crises and long-term emerging priorities related to oil and chemical spill responses, restoration, marine debris, and disaster preparedness. From his work overseeing the Deepwater Horizon response scientific support and injury assessment, to the Marine Debris program development, to the launch of the Disaster Preparedness Program, Dave’s visionary and thoughtful leadership has enabled those working with and for him to exceed their goals and better meet the needs of the nation.

Scott Lundgren was named as the next director of the Office of Response & Restoration.

Scott will be assuming the helm of an office that protects and restores ocean and coastal resources from the impacts of oil, chemicals, marine debris, and other hazards through its leadership, training, and time critical services. OR&R’s programs provide important products and services that benefit the environment, public, and economy.

Scott joined NOAA in 2015 as the leader of OR&R’s Emergency Response Division where he has lead scientific support for preparedness for and response to over 600 significant spills and coastal incidents including extensive response following recent hurricane seasons. Prior to NOAA, Scott served as a 23 year civilian employee of the Coast Guard in several environmental response and incident management positions from the field to headquarters, including serving as the senior technical advisor to the Coast Guard’s Marine Environmental Response program office and leading the Coast Guard’s all hazards preparedness division. Scott holds master’s degrees in Natural Resources Management/Biology from Harvard University Extension School and in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Environmental Studies from Tufts University. He, his wife, and high school son reside in Fairfax, Virginia, and their daughter is a college sophomore in Boston.
