SCAA Participates in First Maritime College and Career Fair for Maritime Industries Academy

SCAA joined other local and regional colleges, businesses, and associations at the first College and Career Fair for Maritime Industries Academy High School held at MITAGS - The Maritime Institute of Technology campus in Linthicum, Maryland in April.  The SCAA booth was on display and SCAA Executive Director John Allen was on hand to meet with students and discuss the spill response industry and career awareness.  SCAA members in the Baltimore area were invited to participate.  SCAA’s booth attracted attention and was well situated between Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Moran Towing Corporation.  A major challenge faced by America’s maritime industry is how to attract the next generation of mariners and maritime leaders.  The matter of grooming the next generation of spill response professionals is an issue of importance to SCAA, so it was felt important to engage potential mariners at the high school level.

Today’s students often consider careers in well-known fields like medicine, finance, law or science. Few are even aware of the opportunities that exist in the maritime arena, both afloat and ashore. These opportunities range from vessel operation to managing fleet itineraries to positions in export and import trades ashore – all well-paying, career-focused jobs. The Maritime Industries Academy High School in Baltimore is one of the few high schools in the country with the vision to offer a specialized maritime curriculum. The curriculum fosters interest in and appreciation of the industry as a career option and prepares students for trade or vocational school, college, or the maritime and naval academies. Building a strong cadre of deep sea, blue water, brown water and shoreside personnel strengthens both the maritime industry and the country itself.

The Maritime Industries Academy’s vision is to promote leadership, academic excellence, encourage educational innovation, and develop a sense of family and citizenship for highly motivated, academically talented students.

Its mission is to seek to promote leadership, creative fervor, and foster high aspirations of talented young people; to ignite their intellectual growth; to develop their critical thinking skills; to challenge them through traditional and experimental strategies; to instill in them a sense of family and citizenship, and to positively influence the larger educational community.

SCAA encourages all members to consider mentorship and internships for young adults at the community level to create greater awareness of maritime careers and work opportunities, and respect for and preservation of the marine environment.
