Mid-Atlantic Regional Business Meeting and Engagement Mixer Recap

The Spill Control Association of America (SCAA) recently conducted its second in a series of Regional Business Meetings for 2023. The meeting weas held at Schaffer’s Canal House in Chesapeake City, MD., and was well-attended by a mix of thirty-five (35) SCAA members and representatives from both industry and the USCG.

In keeping with our goal of delivering programs around our three strategic Pillars of Advocacy, Education and Engagement; the meeting hit upon each of these key areas.

Bob Poole, president of Delaware Bay River Cooperative (DBRC), provided an overview of the protection system used at Pea Patch Island, which is one of the largest heron nesting grounds in the northeast.

Captain Kate Higgins-Bloom of Sector Delaware Bay gave an overview of her responsibilities and mission, followed by Josh Miller, who spoke specifically on the topics of Basic Ordering Agreements (BOAs) and Government-Initiated Unannounced Exercises (GIUEs). The presentation provided an opportunity for some excellent dialogue and discussion between the attendees. Having several industry representatives in the room only strengthened the dialogue, as it showcased the need for regulators, industry and the OSRO community to understand the inherent inter-dependency on one another to do their respective jobs during GIUE’s.

Lastly, SCAA’s Executive Director provided a business update on  the Association, including an overview of the Association and its history, as well as a summary of on-going initiatives that SCAA is currently working on.

SCAA Treasurer Stephen Pelna and Board Member Paul Rutherford were instrumental in assisting with the meeting planning, and securing the outside presenters. We also want to thank you to our Meeting Sponsor companies: ACME Environmental, Hepaco, Lewis Environmental, National Response Corporation and Miller Environmental Group for helping out with this event!
