NOAA's Emergency Response Division (ERD)  is recruiting for an Environmental Scientist in Anchorage Alaska. The position includes traditional spill response plus disaster preparedness responsibilities. Note that the application process opened yesterday and will close on July 5.

Some background.  

  • Serve as the principal science advisor (Scientific Support Coordinator or SSC) to the Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC), and as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Regional Preparedness Coordinator (RPC) in regional Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) field operations, to coordinate science and lead the NOAA Team during technically and politically complex oil and hazardous material incidents and disasters.
  • Serve as a liaison with the regional response and scientific communities, Federal, state and local agencies; academic institutions; and other organizations to formulate contingency plans, preparedness projects and to support exercise efforts related to coastal disasters and spills of hazardous substances.
  • Serve as the primary Department of Commerce (DOC)/NOAA technical and policy expert on the Regional Response Team and Joint Response Team. Represent National Ocean Service (NOS) interests in disaster contingency planning efforts as a member of FEMA Regional Interagency Steering Committee (RISC).
  • Conduct training on scientific and technical subjects related to emergency management, disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and pollution response methods.
