On April 5th and 6th, 2023, the Spill Control Association of America (SCAA) held its Annual Meeting and Conference at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront in Jacksonville, FL. This meeting had a record attendance of over one and twenty-five (125) SCAA members, speakers and guests that enjoyed two full days of presentations and lively interaction. The program was designed around SCAA’s three pillars of Advocacy, Education and Engagement, and with an eye towards a number of emerging issues and market trends facing SCAA membership. In addition to the regular items that were included for the Annual Meeting and Conference, SCAA celebrated its 50th Anniversary and welcomed its newest President, Angie Martin.
Conference Program – Day 1
Opening on Wednesday, April 5th, the conference began with a safety overview, a “State of the Association Address,” and the introduction of Angie Martin, Senior Vice President at Heritage Environmental Services, as the incoming President of SCAA. At this time, Past President, Nelson Fetgatter, President/Owner of Phoenix Pollution Control, received his clock as commemoration of his time served as President of the Association. Nelson served as the Association’s President from 2020-2022. Throughout the day, speakers touched on topics from marine plastics and “nurdle” spills, PFAS and EPA rulings and regulations, outlook and trends of employee and employer changes moving forward, and several other topics. Day one concluded with a “Fifty Years of SCAA Video Presentation” for the membership and was followed by a reception to celebrate this achievement.
50th Anniversary Reception
On Wednesday evening, April 5th, SCAA hosted a 50th Anniversary celebration and mixer, with incoming President Angie Martin delivering remarks to the crowd, followed by an official cake cutting ceremony with a number of SCAA’s past presidents.
Conference Program – Day 2
Thursday morning, April 6th started with a special equipment and technology demonstration entitled “Digital Solutions for emergency Response: Ensuring Clarity in the Midst of Chaos”, where a number of SCAA member companies displayed their unique capabilities. Participating companies included:

Several additional panels followed this demonstration that covered topics such as marijuana in the workplace, battery challenges from collecting to effective recycling, a USCG update, and a live survey to gather information from participants and their experience from this meeting.
