ICCOPR 2022-2027 Oil Pollution Research and Technology Plan Released

The US Coast Guard, as one of the 16-member Interagency Coordination Committee on Oil Pollution Research (ICCOPR) Committee members, has published a Blog post detailing the release of the 2022-2027 Oil Pollution Research and Technology Plan (OPRTP).  The ICCOPR was established by Title VII of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (Section 70001) to “coordinate a comprehensive program of oil pollution research, technology development, and demonstration among the federal agencies, in cooperation and coordination with industry, 4-year institutions of higher education, research institutions, state governments, and other nations, as appropriate, and shall foster cost-effective research mechanisms, including the joint funding of the research."

The OPRTP describes 28 Standing Research Areas and 171 different Research and Development Priorities recommended by the Committee to be addressed by industry, academia, government, and non-government organizations over the next six years.  The plan presents the Committee's overall research priorities and explains the process the Committee used to identify research gaps, noteworthy oil spill events, and the current state of oil pollution knowledge.

The value of this report may not immediately affect our SCAA members and their operations, but will likely impact us all in the future as the stated research area priorities are addressed.  SCAA Members should all read the oil spill research priorities of the US Government as a whole and understand where the various agencies are focusing their priorities and funding.
