ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA (
January 14, 2019 ) - The Spill Control
Association of America (SCAA), the Voice of the Response Industry, today
announced the organization's full support for both Senate Bill 21 (Pay
Our Coast Guard Act) and House Resolution 367 (Pay Our Coast
Guard and Parity Act of 2019).
These key
legislative acts...with bi-partisan support in both Chambers...makes continuous
appropriations for Coast Guard pay in the event of a government shutdown and
brings the service in line with their Department of Defense military and
civilian counterparts.
Since
1790, Coast Guard personnel have been at the forefront of a multi-mission
service that is dedicated to national security, environmental protection,
marine safety, and military readiness. Members of the Coast Guard... enlisted
and officer...military and civilian... have performed these mission
requirements without question and with selfless dedication to our
country. When appropriations run out to fund civilian government,
they have always continued to stay "on board, on duty". Under this current shutdown, these
dedicated Americans continue to serve their country... all while staring down a
severe hardship that does not face their military (and civilian) compatriots in
the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force.
"As
a partner and stakeholder in environmental protection and marine safety, we
support the dedication of the members of the United States Coast Guard,"
said SCAA President Devon Grennan. "Under
this government shutdown, we see over 40,000 dedicated Americans performing
selfless acts of heroism, saving lives, protecting our environment...and doing
so without knowing when their next paycheck may be deposited...this situation
should not be occurring and should be remedied".
