For the past seven consecutive years, SCAA has presented an Environmental Excellence Award – an engraved Weems & Plath Gimbal Box Clock and a certificate recognizing their achievement – to a selected recipient graduate at each of the seven maritime academies.
One of the recipients of the award, In June, was Ensign Andrew Mueller, USN from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Andrew is currently on Active Duty Navy stationed at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi having been selected as a student naval aviator. Additionally, he is a first generation Kings Pointer (his mother is a school teacher and his father is a Navy Captain in the reserves having flown the A-6 and F/A-18). Andrew took a keen interest in marine environmental protection having been the only American cadet of his year to sail aboard both a crude oil tanker with Crowley and selected by Shell Shipping and Trading to sail aboard an LNG carrier. Once he returned to the Academy, he completed the KP Scholar Program, a 9 credit independent study, on LNG and its impact on the United States energy independence
SCAA founded the Environmental Excellence Award program in 2008 which has been expanded to include all seven maritime academies in the U.S. This program recognizes one graduating Midshipman or First Classman at each academy who has demonstrated outstanding interest, creativity, initiative and commitment to environmental excellence in the performance of their course of study and extracurricular involvement.
SCAA members who volunteer, attend the graduation ceremonies and present the inscribed clock awards.
SCAA’s Mission as The Voice of Spill Response Professionals, is representation of broad coalition of emergency responders, manufacturers and environmental firms who collectively address Industry challenges, in order to strengthen and improve our nation’s response community.
