NOAA lecture series: You Don't Know What You Don't Know

You Don't Know What You Don't Know (YDKWYDK)

Welcome to the year of 2022 for your favorite online lecture series! NOAA is going on to our third year running and as always we are trying to provide you with great response content so you may notice some changes in the show as the year goes on. Don't worry, the content and overall goal of the show will not change and continue to connect you to oil spill topics that you had no idea existed and to update you on changes on the response and prevention front!

This lecture’s topic will be the Environmental Sensitivity Index Maps or ESI's. We are pleased to welcome Nicolle Rutherford.

Nicolle is a member of the NOAA Emergency Response Division team working as a biologist as well as the manager of the ESI program and CAFE program. The maps can be used in a variety of areas but are particularly useful preparing for and during a spill response. They concisely identify sensitive environmental areas including animal species, shorelines, aquatic habitats, birds, and so on. Most have information about breeding seasons or identify when different fish or birds will be in the area during the year based on migration patterns. As you can imagine a lot of teamwork and time goes into creating these maps!

So come, sit, and enjoy as Nicolle discusses the use of this tool!

Next episode is Thursday January 20 at 3pm EST
