The Passing of Jim Miller

SCAA pays lasting tribute to one of our spill response industries pioneers, Jim Miller, who passed away on 24 June at the age of 85.  Jim founded Miller Environmental Group in the early 1970’s and co-founded National Response Corporation (NRC) in the early 1990’s.  It’s fair to say that Jim will always be a spill response industry legend. Those who have been around prior to and during the passing of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, will remember Jim Miller as one of those guys who were the savvy, tough, hardworking, entrepreneurial, and successful leaders of our spill response industry; guys like Pappy Parker, Jim Weber Sr, Mark Chambers,  Tom Lewis, Jack Gallagher, Dave Usher, Alan McKim, Les Stanfield, and a cast of others.

The book, NOTHING BAD EVER HAPPENS, commissioned by his children led by his son, Mark Miller, and published in 2017, chronicles Jim Miller’s Life of Hard Knocks, Hard Work, Tough Love, and Joy.  It’s a great read about one man’s life journey; a remarkable American life.   For those who knew and worked with Jim Miller will remember him as a wonderful mentor. On the back of the book’s dust cover in a quote from Charles Fabricant, CEO of SEACOR Holdings, and co-founder of NRC:

“Jim Miller is a man of his word. When you shake hands with him, you have a deal … The world is full of people who say yes but who fail miserably when it comes to execution.  From what I’ve seen, Jim could not fail.  He refused to fail.”

SCAA is making a donation to the Seatuck Environmental Association in the name and recognition of James Miller, Sr.

We bid you farewell, Jim Miller.  Rest in peace.
